Frequently Asked Questions

What is Active Release Techniques (ART)?

ART is a patented soft tissue management system that treats dysfunction in muscles, ligaments, tendons, fascia and nerves. An exceptional advancement in bodywork everyone can benefit from.

How can I prepare for a session?

Being fully hydrated is the most important thing. Avoid coffee or anything else that dehydrates you. Light dynamic movement with stretching is best.

What should I expect during a session?

A session looks slightly different for everyone. In general this is NOT a full body relaxation massage. Before each session we map out our problem areas and then get to work. Because we are working on myofascial lines we look for the connections between these problem areas. Lots of communication is used to be as efficient as possible. There will likely be position shifts often and we may work seated.

What can I do after a session?

Immediately following your treatment we encourage you to take a walk. Major changes can happen in a session so walking acclimates your body to its new potential. Later, an epsom salt bath is highly advised. The salt soak draws the toxins we pushed out of the soft tissue, out of the body so they don’t resettle. And again, HYDRATE. Alkalized water is best for its detoxifying properties.

What should I wear for the session?

Loose, comfortable clothing such as workout gear is best. Tight, form fitting bottoms are very difficult to work through so basketball or jogging shorts work best. In order to work all problem areas, you may be asked to undress to your comfort level and draping will always be provided.

Is it ok to exercise after a session?

Getting in a workout before your session is a great way to warm up and find problem areas. After a session it is not advised to work hard, although a light swim or walk can be quite beneficial.

How often should I come?

Just like exercising, our treatment builds session to session. If we are working on a chronic pattern the frequency needs to be higher. In the case of a sports injury, often only a few sessions are needed to restore proper function. However, as our understanding of compensatory patterns grows, we realize that this work is never done. Serious pre-hab and movement coupled with regular treatment sessions is the only way to “fix” anything.

If I get ROCK taped, how long can it stay on?

The tape can and should stay on as long as its doing its job, which is typically 3-6 days. If the ends start to fray and curl up simply trim them back to where they are attached. You can shower with the tape on (but dont scrub it) and some tape is extra waterproof to go in the ocean and endure multiple workouts.

Do you ONLY work with Athletes?

No, I work with anyone that moves their body daily, is seeking to manage or alleviate pain, wants to move better, and/or enhance daily performance.

Can I get both ART and movement coaching in a single session?

That will vary person to person based on goals, needs and treatment strategy. Initial sessions are focused more on soft tissue manipulation (massage) which leads to a corrective strategy in movement if needed. However, if a movement program is desired or warranted immediately, we will meld the two services strategically based on your goals.

What is your cancellation policy?

If you need to cancel your appointment, please do so at least 24 hours in advance to avoid a cancellation fee of $50 (exceptions considered for illness or emergency) . If you cancel your appointment within 12 hours of your scheduled time, you will be required to pay the full amount if I cannot get your time slot filled.

Do you accept insurance?

At this time, I do not accept insurance.

Do you have a referral program?

Yes! For every person you refer (and they book a session of course), you get 20% off your next visit. For every 3 people you refer, you get a free 60 minute session.
